Michael Berkeley

An Introduction to Sport and Music Photography

This talk explains how to get started in sport and music photography, highlighting key lessons by bringing out what works and what doesn’t.  It reveals what it’s like working in an environment where anything can happen at a moment’s notice and where lighting is outside your control.

The first half of the talk sets out the key principles, using examples from football and cricket, as well as photographing at The Joiners music venue in Southampton.  The second half covers some case studies, including photographing at a music festival, a cycling event, and a basketball match.

The talk is profusely illustrated and the metadata is provided for each of the images, which means that there is something for everyone.  The aim is to enthuse those who have not taken sport and music photographs before to go out and give it a try – and feel that they have the knowledge and skills to do so successfully.

Robin Whalley returns with a demonstration of Photoshop techniques:

1. Adjustments and selection tools in Adobe Camera RAW, starting with a RAW file.

3. Dodging and Burning using Luminosity Masks – I will probably use either TK Actions or Lumenzia (Photoshop Plugins) to produce the Luminosity Masks, but I can also demonstrate a manual method as well.

4. Painting with colour through a luminosity mask. This will make use of blending modes as will the Dodging and Burning above.

5. I’ll demonstrate my version of the Orton Effect using a frequency Separation generated in TK Actions.
I plan to demonstrate these techniques using several different images.
