Most talks are held via Zoom. Meetings, workshops and competition evenings take place at the United Reformed Church, Vicars Cross unless stated otherwise.

You do not have to be a member to attend our events. If you are not a member you are welcome to sign up to any Zoom talk via Eventbrite. You can alternatively use the form which appears on this page below the talk. As a guest we ask you to make a small contribution of £4 towards our costs.

For evenings at the church hall – guests please pay £4 in cash only on the door.

Tuesday 9 January

Den Fawcett – MY FAVOURITE THINGS

Den is a popular and long-standing member of the Society. He will present some Audio Visuals created from images taken during his long and extensive time as a photographer – A Few Of My Favourite Things. The topics covered are a year in my local woodland – Hooton Woods – Our Beautiful Coast – a quick spin around parts of the UK and Ireland – East Coast Wildlife – Birds of the Farne Islands and Grey Seals and Pups on the Lincolnshire coast. – Hoylake RNLI – local heroes – Art and Photography – Abstract images using both mediums – Digital Portrait Art – a place were portraiture and abstraction are combined to make interesting contemporary  images.

Competition – Monochrome

With two classes, Prints and Digitally Projected Images (DPI), the competition will take place at the United Reformed Church, Vicars Cross.

Tuesday 23 January

Tony North – Abstract Photography

Tony North is well known to us as an award winning macro photographer including overall winner of the latest International Garden Photographer of the Year competition. 

He is now doing more abstract photography of both natural and artificial subjects, both being featured in his new talk.

Practical Session – Portrait Lighting

A hands-on session at the United Reformed Church, Vicars Cross for members to learn some basic skills in portrait lighting.

We plan to have at least two sets of lights available, with models, for members to try out.

Thomas Peck – Imaging Reality, Documentary and Street Photography

Tom is a regular contributor to magazines such as onlandscape.com and Black & White Photography where he writes about the aesthetics of photography. He is also a workshop leader for questphoto.co.uk, focusing mostly on landscape and cityscape photography. He judges for the EAF, and is the PDI Secretary for his local camera club, Loughton CC.

Images show what has happened, don’t they? They depict reality, they are ‘proof’. Documentary photography gives insight into events and street photography allows us to glimpse other people’s behaviour. This talk will take us through the history of documentary/street photography using well known photographs liberally mixed with the author’s own photography. We will ask the question: is what we see in the photographs actually reality? Can we trust these ‘documentary’ photographs?

Tuesday 20 FebRuary

Jason Wharam DPAGB, BAHons, BSc, MSc, DSc – A Guide’s View (Safari Experiences)

Born in Zimbabwe, Jason’s love for the African bush grew by spending time bird watching, hunting, camping and exploring the surrounding areas. He joined the safari industry and started working as a trainee safari guide before joing on to work as a guide in various National Parks all over Southern Africa. He achieved his full Professional Guides Licence in 1999.

Jason has travelled extensively in Africa and is a very keen photographer, having pictures published in well-known travel and outdoor magazines such as Getaway and Africa Geographic. His passion and excitement for Africa’s bush and its wildlife is contagious and rubs off on all that travel with him in search of an authentic African experience.

SATURDAY 2 MARCH

EXHIBITIONopens at the GROSVENOR MUSEUM Chester, and runs until Sunday 2nd June. Prints, digital images and vintage cameras will be on display. Bring your friends!

Justin Garner – HDR Techniques

Justin will talk about the history of HDR photography and his approach to creating High Dynamic Range images. He will speak about the things he looks for and the techniques he uses.

Practical Session – Tabletop Photography

A hands-on session at the United Reformed Church, Vicars Cross for members to learn some basic skills in tabletop photography.

With two classes, Prints and Digitally Projected Images (DPI), the competition will take place at the United Reformed Church, Vicars Cross.

The theme this season is “Industry”. As you are aware this is a very open category, it can be human industry or industry in nature. The choice is yours.

Tuesday 2 April

Derek Gale – macro and close up photography

Derek has been a photographer for many years, enjoying both the film and digital eras. He loves looking for the less obvious and using techniques such as camera movement and “bokeh” to produce abstract images. He also loves helping people learn new techniques, and talking about his work to clubs and societies. Derek is an experienced tutor and has run over 30 workshops for the RPS. This Macro talk covers the equipment required, techniques, issues that arise – and how to solve them, and lighting for macro.

Awards Presentation & End of Season Social

We will gather at the United Reformed Church, Vicars Cross, for an end-of season celebration of the best images from the 2023-24 competitions. Trophy winners, including our Photographer of the Year, will receive their trophies.
